Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Eduardo GARCÍA BENITO

Born1891
Died1981
LanguageSpanish
NationalitySpain
Born in Spain, Eduardo Garcia Benito first made his name as a commercial illustrator, collaborating with printers such as Alfred Tolmer in 1913 and Draeger in 1916.

Another illustrator, Georges Lepape, was working for Draeger at the same period, while simultaneously producing fashion plates for the Gazette du Bon Ton; it was for this same publication that Benito subsequently worked, contributing vignettes in which elongated female figures gave form to the creations of Jeanne Lanvin, Beer, and Larsen.

The figures, Cubist in inspiration, are irresistibly reminiscent of Modigliani's paintings, in which attenuated limbs are paired with mask-like faces. This studied impersonality of the body was taken up with great success by Benito, who at the same period began contributing to other periodicals, most notably the French edition of Vogue, for which he produced numerous covers.

He subsequently pursued his career as an illustrator working alongside writers on their texts, among them Jean Cocteau, whom he had met at Draeger, and for whom he illustrated Dans le ciel de la patrie in 1918.
