Chez Jean-Baptiste Cusson|à Nancy 1712|9.50 x 16.50 cm|relié

Le Roman bourgeois is certainly, with Francion by Sorel, one of the most innovative works of the 17th century in terms of writing; it shares with Sorel the realistic and comic aspect. Furetière constructs his novel against fashionable novels, chivalric or pastoral romances, like L'Astrée; the work appears to be, in its fragmented narration, a true demonstration of the author's thinking on the novelistic genre and a critique of the literature of his time. The strongly digressive character of the work, its apparent lack of unity, led to failure in terms of the novel's reception, whereas Francion was one of the most widely read works in the 17th century.
