Jules VERNE, Adolphe d' ENNERY
Les voyages au théatre
Hetzel|Paris 1881|16.50 x 24.50 cm|relié
First edition. 68 illustrations, including 14 plates after drawings by Benett and Meyer. Catalogue AQ in fine for the year 1882 (a later issue of the printing contains a catalogue from 1889). This is the same printing that served for the publisher's different formats: in wrappers, half-shagreen, or clothbound.
Special publisher's binding, with the first type theater curtain. Red cloth. Jauzac attributes it to Lenègre. Spine with ornate compartments. Brown endpapers.
First cover good, but upper right corner worn at bottom. Spine fairly good with discreet stains. Headcaps somewhat rubbed and softened. Corners rubbed, the 2 on the second cover slightly bent. Second cover with a darker area and some stains, one corner worn. The leaves corresponding to the plates printed on heavy paper stand out as they are slightly larger and were inserted with the delivery of each part. Fresh overall with rare pale foxing scattered throughout.
Good copy overall.
Born from the collaboration between Jules Verne and Adolphe D'Ennery, three extraordinary voyages were adapted for the theater: Around the World in 80 Days, The Children of Captain Grant, and Michael Strogoff.
