Fut professeur à l'École polytechnique et directeur de l'Observatoire de Paris. Était membre de l'Académie des sciences de l'Institut de France, section astronomie. Nommé officier de la Légion d'Honneur en 1867

Binding open marine sorrow, back with five nerves set with gold dotted boxes decorated with double gold richly decorated with gilded decorative motifs, floral friezes, gold wheels on the covers, frames a set of triple gilt fillets on covers, gilt lace on contreplats, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, double gilt fillets on the cuts, gilt edges, superb contemporary binding signed Capé. Signed autograph of the author and miss Madame Lebon. Book illustrated with 389 figures in the text. A pale marginal wetting affecting the title page and dwindling over the first 50 sheets, rare spots.
