Ancien élève de l'Ecole Polytechnique (promotion 1834) et de l'Ecole des Mines de Paris (promotion 1836, nommé ingénieur en 1841). Ingénieur et astronome. Fut professeur à l'École polytechnique et directeur de l'Observatoire de Paris. Était membre de l'Académie des sciences de l'Institut de France, section astronomie. Nommé officier de la Légion d'Honneur en 1867
