Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

NationalityFrance
Claude-Philibert Dabry de Thiersant was a French marine infantry officer, diplomat, and sinologist. After graduating from Saint-Cyr as a second lieutenant in 1847, he served in Guadeloupe and participated in the Crimean War. Sent to China in 1860 as French government commissioner in the Zhoushan Islands and Tianjin, he was appointed French consul in Hankou in 1862, a position he held until 1878. He subsequently held various consular posts in Shanghai, Canton, and Guatemala before being appointed minister plenipotentiary in 1884. His works focused on Chinese medicine, pharmacopoeia, pisciculture, ichthyology, filial piety, and Islam in China. His work La médecine chez les Chinois (1863), although not written by a physician, was one of the first introductions to traditional Chinese medicine in France and was hailed as pioneering work in the dissemination of acupuncture in the West. He also described several freshwater fish species from China, some genera of which still bear his name.
