Augustin CALMET

First Dutch edition of Dom Augustin Calmet’s Dictionnaire historique, critique, chronologique, géographique et littéral de la Bible, published in Leiden by Samuel Luchtmans in 1725-1727 in two large folio volumes. Mattheus Gargon, a Reformed minister and rector of the Latin school at Vlissingen, did more than translate the French work first issued in 1722: he enlarged it and added his own annotations. The Dutch undertaking was later completed in 1731 by a two-volume supplement prepared by Jakob van Ostade and Arnold Heinrich Westerhoff.

Second, revised, corrected and enlarged edition of Dom Augustin Calmet's Dictionnaire historique, critique, chronologique, géographique et littéral de la Bible, and the first to incorporate into a single alphabetical sequence both the text of the 1722 edition and the two supplementary volumes published in 1728. It thus gave this vast exegetical undertaking its definitive form, in four volumes covering A-D, E-M, N-T and V-Z.
