Italian artist Umberto Brunelleschi began working in the 1910s for L'Assiette au beurre under the pseudonym Aroun al Rachid, then collaborated with fashion magazines such as Journal des dames et des modes, Feuillets d'Art, and Gazette du Bon Ton.

He created vignettes imbued with poetry, such as La Fleur et le Miroir, in which one may see a young woman in evening dress gazing at herself in a mirror, a rose in her hand, evoking a fairy-tale princess. It is therefore not surprising to observe that subsequently Brunelleschi turned to this literary genre by illustrating Andersen, Boccaccio, and Perrault.
