Romancier, hagiographe, historien, docteur es lettres (1897) et académicien. Après son agrégation, il fut nommé professeur au lycée d'Aix (1888), puis il obtint une chaire à Alger. Il fut élu à l'Académie française en 1925, en remplacement de Barrès. Ancien élève de l'École normale supérieure (promotion 1885 l)

    The works are bound in threes in half navy-blue shagreen by Houades, the spines decorated with stars and crescent moons in palladium, upper covers preserved (some lower also retained), all edges gilt.
    All the works are illustrated with etchings, lithographs or woodcuts, each by a different artist from among the following : Alexeieff, Ahü, Dignimont, Baudier, Renefer, Drouart, Mainssieux, Suréda, Fouqueray, Serveau and Dethomas.
