First edition of the French translation based on the fifth English edition.
Bradel binding in full cardboard covered with marbled paper, smooth spine faded and decorated with double gilt fillets at head and foot, hazel sheep title and volume labels, two lower corners slightly bumped, contemporary binding. A very pale dampstain at foot of the last two pages of the second volume, otherwise handsome interior condition nearly free from foxing.
Provenance: from the library of Anatole Cerfbeer who offered this copy to a member of his family bearing the name Lévistahl, whose bookplate on an endpaper of the first volume remains legible.
