A literary adviser to the Jean-Louis Barrault–Madeleine Renaud company, then, from 1957, editor-in-chief of the Cahiers Renaud-Barrault, Simone Benmussa also directed, from the Théâtre de l’Odéon, the company’s cultural department and its journal. She adapted for the stage several works by her friend Nathalie Sarraute, including Enfance in 1984 (with the recorded voice of Nathalie Sarraute) and Pour un oui ou pour un non in 1987, as well as texts by Pierre Klossowski, Jean Cocteau, Gertrude Stein, and Samuel Beckett. She was the partner of the actress Erika Kralik.
