Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Guy ARNOUX

Born1886
Died1951
LanguageFrench
NationalityFrance
Illustrator and graphic designer, Guy Arnoux contributed to Gazette du Bon Ton from 1912. There he created vignettes in which the designs of couturiers were displayed on young women with mischievous eyes and barely sketched features.

Thus, in J'en tiens un, a young woman in country attire, gently amused, catches a small fish at the end of her fishing rod; in La Belle Viscomtesse, the costume is in the same manner highlighted whilst the body fades behind the fabrics and the bold black line, so characteristic of Arnoux's style.

But his work moved away fairly quickly from fashion drawings to turn toward military themes, even being appointed official painter of the navy in 1921. Nevertheless, he remained attached to Parisian life and his artistic circle by entering the Cercle des Mortigny, founded in 1908 by Dimitri d'Osnobichine and bringing together numerous artists, many of whom drew alongside Arnoux at the Gazette: Boutet de Monvel, Brissaud, and even the couturier Paul Poiret.
