Half black shagreen binding with small corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt arabesques, gilt friezes at head and foot, traces of rubbing on the joints, small scuffs on the marbled paper boards, corners slightly bumped, contemporary binding.

First edition in French. Original blue wrappers. Corner chip to front cover, author's name in ink to unlettered spine. Good copy. Essay on political philosophy, on natural and rational law, the state, laws and government; the final chapter is devoted to the French Revolution. The author draws upon his peers and history to support his argument. Frédéric Ancillon was a writer and statesman (1766-1837), his works of considerable political and philosophical depth assured him great renown; it was in Germany that he made his career.
