My old country gentleman,
Do you know what should be done with these little panels that are lying around here and there, and that I see appearing from time to time? I'm going to tell you. You should simply sign them, next to my signature. That way the public will know what to expect; it will be an attraction for a collector, and I assure you that the sale will be guaranteed. This stroke of genius has just sprung up in my brain, and I throw this thought on paper, amazed myself by this late and original conception! Examples abound: the Lionnet brothers, Monréal and Blondeau, Alexandre Dumas and Gaillardet, Cogniard and Clairville, Castor and Pollux, Pinaud and Amour... etc.. etc..

Mon vieux gentilhomme campagnard,
Sais-tu ce qu'il faudrait faire avec ces petits panneau [sic] qui traînent à droite à gauche, et que je vois apparaître de temps en temps ? Je vais te le dire. Tu devrais le signer tout simplement, à côté de ma signature. Comme ça le public saura à quoi s'en tenir ; ce sera un attrait pour un amateur, et je t'assure que la vente en sera assurée. Cette idée de génie vient de surgir à l'instant dans mon cerveau, et je jette cette pensée sur le papier, étonné moi-même de cette conception tardive et originale ! Les exemples abondent : les frères Lionnet, Monréal et Blondeau, Alexandre Dumas et Gaillardet , Cogniard et Clairville, Castor et Pollux, Pinaud et Amour... etc.. etc..
