First French edition illustrated with 7 folding plates, including 2 maps of Switzerland and Mont Blanc, and a panorama of the Alps. Half beige cloth 19th-century bindings. Spines with red morocco title labels. Green paper boards. Spines soiled. Corners heavily bumped. Light scattered pale foxing. The last 4 pages of volume 2 with a tear to upper margin with loss not touching text. The very large plate of Switzerland with 2 restorations following tears. A light tear to margin of the Mont Blanc map. Tear with loss p. 77 of volume 1, to lower margin, with loss of a few letters. Undoubtedly one of the finest works on Switzerland. The author made 4 journeys there which allowed him to traverse the country. Beyond a classical travel account, the author's qualities as a historian are found throughout the work, dwelling on historical events, but also on fauna and flora, commerce... One can distinguish the account of the first ascent of Mont Blanc. The appendix contains the stages of Coxe's 4 journeys. The final volume contains the "Faunula helvetica" or catalogue of quadrupeds, birds, amphibians, fish and testaceans of Switzerland, arranged and presented according to Linnaeus's system.
