New edition, from the collection of poets published by Urbain Coustelier. This edition of the poetry contains only Les vigiles de la mort de Charles VII, first published in 1493. It appears that these Vigiles had not been published since the first half of the 16th century. Contemporary full glazed blonde calf binding. Spine with raised bands finely decorated. Beige morocco title and volume labels. Headcap of volume I with lacks and tailcaps of both volumes rather clumsily restored. Corners heavily bumped and damaged. Les vigiles de la mort de Charles VII constitutes a chronicle of the times, from the king's birth to his death; it includes the wars and sieges of the English, the epic of Joan of Arc... one even sees that Charles VII (1403-1461) organized and created the first professional army. We know that above all, Martial, more poet than historian, devoted himself to putting into verse the chronicles of Berry and Chartier. This was above all at the time a commemorative work, in a time when Charles VII was reproached for numerous faults.
