First annotated edition established by Gronovius, published posthumously. Decorated with a handsome frontispiece by A. de Blois. The second part consisting exclusively of Gronovius's commentaries has a half-title page and its own pagination. Contemporary Dutch rigid full vellum binding. Smooth spine with title in black ink at head. Boards stamped with a blind central roundel. A small 1 cm lack to one edge. Good copy, in a handsome typical Dutch binding. Joanne Fridriech Gronovius (1611-1671) was a distinguished Latinist and scholar recognized in the world of letters. He established numerous editions of Latin and Greek authors. After long study travels he ended his career at Leiden and succeeded Daniel Heinsius in belles-lettres. The importance of Gellius's Attic Nights for knowledge of the ancient world is unique, as he wrote and noted haphazardly during his stay in Athens everything he heard and saw, addressing all themes and disciplines (philosophy, literature, medicine, natural science...) with the result that the book contains quotations and fragments of lost and forgotten authors and constitutes an extraordinary mine of information.
