First Latin edition, rare, and illustrated with 1 frontispiece and 9 large plates not included in the pagination containing 41 figures, representing scenes of combat, ships, war machines... Printed in two numbered columns.
Contemporary full vellum binding, Jansenist spine with raised bands (title in black ink), large central medallion on boards in blind with frame and fleur-de-lys in the corners. Vellum with stains. Some pages show worming and yellow dampstains in lower margins. Jump from column 661 to 736 on the same page, without loss. Upper joint largely split, lower joint split at foot, one tear without loss to a compartment, despite these defects a handsome copy, with quite an appealing appearance.
After publishing notes on Plutarch and Basil, Potter (1674-1747) published his archeologia graeca in 2 volumes in octavo in English in 1698. The book was a reference for Greek archaeology until the mid-19th century, it studies Greek institutions in detail, particularly Athenian, customs, medicine, the army, divination and the role of the Gods... This Hellenist later became Archbishop of Canterbury.
