The Roman histories seem to have appeared for the first time with annotations by Paul the Deacon in 1471 in Rome, in folio. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the British Library possess this incunable edition, but not ours, which we have been unable to locate in electronic catalogues.
Printer's device with pelican on title page.
Contemporary full calf binding. Raised spine decorated with 4 fleurons; blind fillets on headcaps. Boards with geometric motif. Blind ruled frames forming a central rectangle with 4 fleurons in the corners. Some stains. Handsome Renaissance binding.
Eutropius lived in the 4th century. The Abridgment of Roman History, in ten books, covers from the foundation of Rome to the end of Emperor Jovian's reign (364). It is a clear narrative in an easy style, composed for the instruction of Emperor Valens, it seems. He was a Roman historian during the reigns of emperors Constantine I, Julian, Jovian, Valentinian I, Valens, Gratian and Theodosius I. He participated in Jovian's expedition against the Persians.
Paul the Deacon (720/730-797) born in Friuli in Lombardy, stayed at Charlemagne's court, entered as a monk at Monte Cassino in 774. Historiographer of the Lombards and author of a history of the bishops of Metz and a life of Pope Gregory. He was also a theologian and poet.
