Alexander POPE
Histoire de Martinus Scriblerus, de ses ouvrages & de ses découvertes
Chez Paul Knapton|à Londres [London] 1755|9 x 16.50 cm|relié
First French edition in Pierre Henri Larcher's translation.
Contemporary full marbled calf binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. One tear with slight loss to the third compartment. Good copy.
Martinus Scriblerus was originally a literary club whose members (Pope, Swift, John Gay, Arbuthnot...) gathered around the satire of knowledge and erudition.
Scriblerus means scribbler. The texts were written collectively and by different hands, but always under the fictitious name of Martinus Scriblerus. The club was founded in 1712 and closed in 1745. The work therefore establishes the biography of the illustrious scholar Martinus Scriblerus with all the satirical and humorous verve typical of 18th-century English literature.
