Fifth edition, expanded with the volume of Histoire des ouvrages pour & contre les théâtres. The first volume appeared in 1756 under the title: Lettre de M. Desp. de B. à M. le chevalier de ***. The histoire des ouvrages [...] was inserted for the first time in the third edition, and was expanded in the fourth. The booksellers have added extracts from journals on Desprez de Boissy's work. La lettre sur les spectacles is followed by that of Monsieur de Campigneulle on Desprez de Boissy's work.
Contemporary full red morocco bindings. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title and volume labels. Triple gilt rule frame on covers. Edges gilt. Slight lack at head of volume II. Spine of volume II faded. 4 corners slightly bumped. pp. 180 to 190 in volume I, large brown stain, otherwise copy relatively fresh. Handsome copy in contemporary morocco.
Rational and reasoned criticism not only against theater and shows but especially against the frequentation and pleasures one seeks there. The work by the Jansenist lawyer Despez de Boissy takes its place in a vast quarrel that extended throughout the second half of the 18th century regarding education and good morals and the pernicious roles of shows and particularly of theater in relation to these. The second volume is particularly interesting for the history of theater and public theaters, as well as shows, and provides a valuable bibliography.

First French edition, rare. The work published in 1765 in German under the title Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra, will be followed by a Russian translation published in 1770 by the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and then transposed into French by Louis Bernoulli.
Contemporary binding in full marble-patterned calf, spine in decorated compartments, title pieces in red morocco and volume numbering in decorated brown calf.
Upper spine end of volume 1 worn. A section of the bottom lower joint missing from volume 1. Lower joint split at the top of volume 1, upper joint split along 2 panels of the spine. Scratches on the lower boards.
Euler (1707-1783) was considered by his peers as the greatest mathematician of his time. He remains a key figure in the history of mathematics due to his many, rich contributions. The éléments d’algèbre are composed of two parts, L’Analyse déterminée and L’Analyse indéterminée. Lagrange’s additions of fractions are included at the end of the book. The two volumes contain many mathematical operations and all calculation methods across all areas of algebra, particularly formulas for solving equations.
