First edition containing the commentaries of Wolfgang Hunger. The previous edition dates from 1540. The date of 1561 appears at the end of the dedication by Albert Reyffenstain, the publisher of the work. In addition to the main text, the book incorporates the author's Diarum, De congressu caesaris Maximiliani augusti, & trium regum, hungaria, bohemiae, & poloniae, Vladislai, Ludovici, ac Sigismundi... De turcurum origine, Quibus itineribus turci sint aggrediendi by Felix Petiantus. Annotations printed in two columns, the index in 4. Beautiful and numerous decorated initials.
Full calf binding, 17th century. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Decorative border on covers. Red morocco title label. The head cap bears a minor tear. The covers show some surface scuffing. Missing the final index leaf containing letters W, X, Y, Z.
Armorial copy of François duc d'Argouges (Normandy) bishop of Vannes, son of François, first president of the parliament of Brittany, he was appointed bishop of Vannes in December 1687. Quarterly or and azure, three cinquefoils gules, placed two and one, overall.
Johannes Spiesshaymer called Cuspinianus or Cuspinian (1473-1529) wrote this History of the Roman emperors up to Justinian, of the Byzantine emperors and of the Germanic Roman emperors. Famous Viennese humanist of his time, his portrait was painted by Cranach and is in the Vienna museum, he was at once historian, poet and diplomat, scientist, professor of poetic art and rhetoric, as well as medicine in Vienna. His chronicle of Austria, though unfinished, remains important. Commentaries by Wolfgang Hunger (1511-1555).
