Giovanni Battista Filippo GHIRARDELLI
Il Costantino tragedia, con la difesa della medesima
e Giovanni Andreoli|in Roma. Apresse di Gregorio [Rome] 1660|14 x 7.50 cm|deux parties en un volume relié
Second edition. The first seems to have also appeared in Rome in 1653, but without the announced second part (in first edition) which bears its own title page, La difesa, by Ippolito Shiribandelo. Not found in French catalogs, present at the British library and at Oxford.
Contemporary full vellum binding. Smooth spine with black handwritten title. Numerous wormholes on the spine. The upper part of the book has lost one stitch (of the 3 present) and has become detached from the binding. Missing an endpaper and half-title to the first part as well as the first leaf of the author's stage directions on his play, which follows the presentation of the characters of the tragedy.
Guirardelli (1623-1653) wrote this five-act tragedy in prose. This is followed by a defense composed of a dialogue between the accuser and the author and provides valuable information on theater and its rules in Italy in the 17th century.
