New edition. A very beautiful title-frontispiece and a title vignette. Title page in red and black. Dedicatory epistle from Jacobus Gronovius to Domenico Passionei.
Contemporary full vellum binding (Dutch binding). Spine with raised bands decorated with blind-tooled fillets. Boards blind-stamped with a central medallion with Du Seuil-style frame and fleurons in the corners. One lack at head, another on the first raised band, a third on the last raised band, and a last one at tail. Lower joint split at head. One corner slightly bumped. Soiling. Despite some defects, beautiful period stamped vellum binding with relatively fresh paper (browning in upper margin throughout the volume).
Edition prepared by Johannes Gronovius, and continued by his son Jacob Gronovius. It is very abundantly annotated with footnotes by both authors but also by Kaspar Schoppe, Peter Lambeck, Louis Carion, Jacques Oisel and others. The Attic Nights, famous compilation of ancient authors on the culture of the period in all fields of knowledge, were written by Aulus Gellius, Roman author of the 2nd century A.D. Each night takes the form of a question: What measures and calculations did Pythagoras use, according to Plutarch, to determine what was the height of Hercules, during his stay on earth; With what patience Socrates bore the intractable humor of his wife. What M. Varro, in one of his satires, said about the duty of a husband; What answer the philosopher Taurus gave me, one day when I asked him if the wise man became angry...
