Contemporary full red morocco binding. Smooth spine decorated with 3 compartmented fleurons, roulette at head and tail. Title and volume labels in garnet morocco. Triple fillet frame on boards. Gilt edges. Signs of rubbing, notably on three upper boards in small areas. Slight lack of leather on lower board of volume II. 2 lower corners slightly bumped.
Very handsome copy, rare in this condition, bound in 5 volumes.
Third of Fielding's great novels which revolutionized English literature and left its mark until the end of the 19th century, Amelia appeared in 1751 in London. Fielding was only 45 years old but had only 3 years left to live. Among his three great novels, The Adventures of Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones and Amelia, Fielding expressed his preference for the latter. In the literary correspondence of Grimm and Diderot we read this judgment on Amelia: "M. Fielding is a very original author, great painter, always true and sometimes as sublime as Molière."
