Chez Sebastien Cramoisy|à Paris 1627|16.50 x 24 cm|relié
The rare first edition. Printer's device on title page.
Contemporary glazed blonde calf binding. Richly ornamented raised spine. Red morocco title label. Triple gilt fillet frame on boards. Roulette on edges and turn-ins. Gilt edges. Cracked joints with various lacks at head and tail. Worn headcaps. Lacks between raised band and title label. Pages fairly yellowed. Corners slightly bumped. Quality binding with numerous defects, but still of handsome appearance.
A highly interesting study which distinguishes itself in this field through its focus on the material and value of medals and coins, whereas the great majority of studies deal essentially with effigies and figures. It becomes very precise and erudite on the various alloys of lead and tin, and gold, among the Romans in particular, on the use of coins and the system on which they rest. The approach of the work is therefore much more archaeological than most works in the field, comparing and reconstructing, both from different known coins and from literature in the field.
