Contemporary full brown marbled calf binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label, havana calf volume label. Narrow 1cm split to upper joint at head of volume II. Signs of rubbing. One restoration to the first plan, filling a tear from the spine. Handsome copy.
Jacques-François de Chastenet, marquis de Puységur, born 13 August 1656 and died 15 August 1743, was elevated to the dignity of Marshal of France in 1734. Under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, he built his career in the king's regiment. An excellent strategist and tactician, he was involved in war councils. His chronological memoirs embrace his numerous campaigns in France in his youth, then in Flanders and Spain, and are rich in military reflections.
