Raymond POISSON
Les dames galantes, ou la confidence reciproque
Chez Jean Pauli|à Amsterdam 1737|7.50 x 13 cm|2 parties reliées en un volume
Second edition after the original published in 1685, rare. Title page in red and black. Printer's device.
Contemporary full vellum binding. Smooth spine with title stamped in blind in black. Handsome copy.
A novel written during the author's retirement which strikes one with its modernity when compared to the prose of Madame de Lafayette and her contemporaries. Its structure (the so-called "nested" genre) and tone resolutely engage with the eighteenth century, where even the historical setting is merely a pretext for narration. The title "Dames galantes" is certainly an editorial choice, as Brantôme's eponymous work was well known at the time.
