Contemporary half brown shagreen binding. The leather of volume 2, although in similar shagreen, is of a lighter brown. Spine with raised bands decorated with blind and gilt fillets. Boards and edges rubbed. Paper very fresh, free from foxing. Good copy.
The 1867 Universal Exhibition, also called the Universal Exhibition of Art and Industry, is chronologically the seventh universal exhibition and the second taking place in Paris after that of 1855. It was held from April 1 to November 3, 1867 on the Champ-de-Mars, in Paris. 41 countries were represented at the exhibition including Japan for the first time. This exhibition would above all be a demonstration and display of the splendor and power of the Second Empire. Desired by Napoleon III, he appointed key figures from economic and political life to head the exhibition. The Champ de Mars was chosen as the location. It received 15 million visitors.
