Anthoine Cellier|Charenton 1668|18.50 x 25 cm|relié
New edition, after the original published in 1665.
Contemporary full brown calf binding. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons. Speckled edges.
Corners slightly bumped, two small wormholes. A small angular lack to title page.
This work is a response to two treatises by Pierre Nicole and Arnault published in 1664. Jean Claude (1619-1687), Protestant minister, was the most eloquent spokesman for the Reformed Church in France until the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The Eucharist was one of the most debated points of controversy between the Protestant church and the Catholic church; the former denying transubstantiation, the host being according to them only a symbol of the figure of Christ, a spiritual presence.
