manifeste sur l'admission des oeuvres modernes aux expositions d'art français à l'étranger
Unpublished autograph manuscript
s. d.|17.70 x 22.80 cm|Deux feuillets et un papillon encollé
Unpublished autograph manuscript signed by the symbolist painter Maurice Chabas, on "the admission of modern works to French art exhibitions abroad". Two leaves and a slip pasted on the first page. Crossed-out passages, fold marks and small marginal tears not affecting text.
Fascinating manifesto for the promotion of living artists and the avant-garde, by Chabas who devoted himself to total abstraction in the 1920s.
"A great meeting will take place shortly on the subject of admitting modern works to French art exhibitions abroad.
[...] Now until this moment, the great art movement that has been manifesting itself for several years, so interesting in its intensity and variety, is not integrally represented in the exhibitions.
By design, the league of the impersonal crushes the personalities, who alone count in art [...]
We do not wish in any way to prevent the past schools, which in sum have been interesting, from uttering their last cry in the arena. But let no obstacle be made to highlighting the true artists with proud souls, who always look higher, magnetized towards the superior spheres of Beauty, goodness and Truth! [...]
Let us not forget our current radiance throughout the entire world, and the ever-growing attraction of intellectuals from all countries, towards the beacon of light that is France [...]
