In his memoirs written in Holland paper, where he found refuge, Wicquefort, a diplomat and intellectual, took the pen to defend himself against the accusations of high treason that earned him a sentence of life imprisonment. Famous diplomat, first in the service of Mazarin, then embellished for a writing on the relations of young Louis XIV with the niece of Mazarin, he found refuge in Holland paper where he informed France of the actions of foreign diplomats and amassadeurs. In 1675 arose the Williamson Affair: Wicquefort is accused of high treason after selling secret despatches to the ambassador of the Crown of England, Knight Williamson. He was arrested on March 25 and taken to prison. In 1676, he was sentenced to life imprisonment after a resounding trial and the confiscation of his property. It was during his stay in prison that he wrote these memoirs on diplomats and amassadeurs and law in Europe. Wicquefort will manage to escape from prison in 1679.
