The inclusion of the Krupp factories stands out somewhat in a production largely devoted to France, but the significance of this industrial enterprise could no longer escape the observer’s notice.
Trained as a physician, Julien Turgan (1824-1887) soon turned to scientific and technical popularisation: he began as a scientific editor for the newspaper L’Événement, founded by Victor Hugo, where he reported on the weekly sessions of the Académie des sciences.
He later became scientific editor for Emile de Girardin’s journal Le Bien-être universel, and founded his own popular science periodical, La Fabrique, la ferme, l’atelier (1851–1853).
During the Prussian invasion, Turgan placed himself at the disposal of the Minister of War, Gambetta, who entrusted him with a major mission concerning the factories producing arms and munitions, which explains the prominence of this sector in Les Grandes usines.
