Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Early autograph letter signed by the young leading man Yves Montand, addressed to Marcel Duhamel regarding Marcel Carné’s film Les Portes de la nuit. One and a half pages written in blue ink on ruled paper. Fold marks from mailing and two punch holes in the left margin, not affecting the text.

Unpublished, this letter was read on France Culture during the program « La Boîte à lettres » in November 2014.

A man of many talents, Marcel Duhamel was a hotelier, publisher, and founder of the Série noire at Gallimard, as well as the French translator of Hemingway and Steinbeck—and the lover of none other than Simone Signoret. A passionate jazz enthusiast, he was a familiar figure in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés scene and was even mentioned in the famous Manuel de Saint-Germain des Prés, in which Boris Vian wrote: « Duhamel [...] a eu une vie fort variée dont le récit nous entraînerait en dehors des limites de ce volume ; mais, à tous les moments de son existence, il a conservé une dignité dans l’allure très caractéristique, et on ne m’ôtera jamais l’idée que Marcel Duhamel est un enfant naturel de feu le roi George V d’Angleterre »
A fine letter referencing Jean Gabin, Marlene Dietrich, and Jacques Prévert, written shortly after Yves Montand's screen tests for Les Portes de la nuit, the second film role of his young career.

Following the resounding success of Les Enfants du Paradis the previous year, the Carné-Prévert duo reunited in 1946 to produce Les Portes de la nuit. Jean Gabin, who had previously worked with them on Le Quai des brumes and Le Jour se lève, was initially cast in the lead role. Alongside Marlene Dietrich, they were to headline the film, but both withdrew at the last moment, the Blue Angel refusing to portray the daughter of a collaborator. Carné and Prévert were forced to seek new leads, and Édith Piaf, a few months after her breakup with Montand, recommended him to Carné. »

At twenty-six, Yves Montand was already a rising star at the Théâtre de l’Étoile, where he opened for Piaf, but his filmography included only one title, Étoile sans lumière by Marcel Blistène, released earlier that same year. This remarkable letter reveals the young actor’s enthusiasm and candor, deeply moved by the world of cinema and honoured to take on a role originally meant for a screen legend:

Marcel Duhamel had met Prévert during their military service in Istanbul, and the two remained close ever since. Prévert, it seems, was fully won over by Montand’s performance: « Je passe sous silence les compliments à n’en plus finir de Prévert. » Carné, on the other hand, was more reserved: « Tu me connais, j’ai demandé à Carné samedi si oui ou non je faisais le film [...] » In the end, Montand secured the role, and the film proved to be a box-office success with over two million admissions.

Letters by Yves Montand are scarce and sought after.
