First edition. Contemporary binding in full blonde sheep, smooth spine with four raised bands, boards decorated with double blind frame, all edges speckled red. The head is worn and the tail slightly damaged. Some surface abrasions and cracked joints are also to note. "The Questions sur la tolérance by Maultrot and Tailhé seek to illuminate all the philosophical, religious and historical foundations of the idea of tolerance. The two authors evoke episodes in Christian history marked by intolerance, notably the Spanish Inquisition and the Albigensian Crusade. An entire chapter is devoted to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, considered as an attack on the laws, rights and freedom of subjects, in addition to being a tactical error since it aimed to reunite Protestants with Catholicism. In the second part of the work, they examine the effects of persecution, and demonstrate that it serves neither the interests of sovereigns nor those of the Church. It should be noted that the authors, probably out of prudence, take their examples from ancient history, and from foreign countries rather than France." Magali Perbost and Agnès Bach: Autour de l'édit de Nantes. The work was placed on the Index by a decree of March 5, 1759. Barbier, 114; Quérard, 640.
