Fourth edition statement, after the first published in 1765. Contemporary full marbled calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title label. One tear with loss at foot. Corners slightly bumped. Good copy. Bergier was responsible for a considerable number of critical works of controversy against the Enlightenment philosophers, notably against the materialists, as a defender of the church and religion. He attacks Rousseau and his theses particularly here, notably those set forth in Emile, which he considers dangerous for man, the state, and religion.
