New edition, after the 1696 first edition. Contemporary binding in full speckled brown calf. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons and a red morocco title label. Boards stamped with armorial device. Edges and headcaps decorated with gilt roulettes. All edges gilt. Worming to spine, tail headcap largely damaged (with loss), three wormholes on lower board, one corner bumped. Some manuscript brackets in margins and a contemporary pen gift inscription at end of volume. Two library stamps on title page and first endpaper. This gallant and playful travel narrative immortalized the two companions, as multiple editions were published over two centuries. This journey is written in charming prose interspersed with light and fairly simple poetry that takes the opposite approach to classical travel narratives. It was profoundly successful.
