French literature places him at the origin of its literary and poetic history for having been one of the first Latin poets of France. Before retiring near Bordeaux, he served as prefect for Italy, then Africa, and finally Gaul. His poetry, often erudite and affected, has the merit of presenting us with Latinity; his correspondence with Paulinus of Nola (converted then canonized) is of great importance for understanding this period.
