Déjà réduite au trois quarts en 1950, cette première version, devenue introuvable du vivant de Blanchot, appartient dans l'esprit de bien des lecteurs à un stade moins évolué de son écriture, et semble mériter la boutade de Jean Paulhan qui disait en 1942 à propos d'Aminadab : « Ce que [Blanchot] écrit est presque insoutenable en 400 pp. et parfaitement beau en 10 pages ». La découverte de Thomas le solitaire nous oblige à réviser ce jugement.
