« Il y a, pour tout ouvrage, une infinité de variantes possibles. » C'est ainsi que Maurice Blanchot présenta en 1950 la nouvelle version de son roman Thomas l'obscur, « écrit […] à partir de 1932, remis à l'éditeur en 1940, publié en 1941 ». Déjà réduite au trois quarts en 1950, cette première version, devenue introuvable du vivant de Blanchot, appartient dans l'esprit de bien des lecteurs à un stade moins évolué de son écriture, et semble mériter la boutade de Jean Paulhan qui disait en 1942 à propos d'Aminadab : « Ce que [Blanchot] écrit est presque insoutenable en 400 pp. et parfaitement beau en 10 pages ». La découverte de Thomas le solitaire nous oblige à réviser ce jugement.
