Gellert was a national glory, celebrated and acclaimed for the purity of his writings and morals, but fell into disuse when he was disparaged by the new school in place, the fiery youth of Sturm und Drang. Posterity has especially retained his fables and tales, translated into French for the first time in this edition printed in Leipzig, the city where the author died in 1769, one year later.
