Pioneer work in the genre of geographical popularization of France. After a career as a poetess, Amable Tastu became a recognized pedagogue and her journey through France would see several reissues and enchant several generations. The narrative progresses by regions and peregrinations, cataloguing the cultural treasures contained in the cities and regions.

It is illustrated with 365 compositions in lithography & engraving, in color and camaïeu, including 37 full-page color plates outside the text under tissue guards, 15 engravings and 22 lithographs. Very numerous monochrome vignettes in the text and decorated initial letters. The editing and printing are particularly fine.

It was in 1888 that James Tissot had a sort of mystical crisis; this revelation of his faith led him to Palestine and Jerusalem, from which he brought back 365 watercolors with which he created this work, a true artist's book. This religious period of his work brought him immense fame; most of the originals are in the Library of Congress in the United States, purchased in 1902, the year of the painter's death, by the Brooklyn Museum.

Catholic reformist, he was the founder of "social Teams" in 1920, which aimed to establish a social elite and bring the good word about the brotherhood born of the trenches to the workers, in the tradition of patronage. Simone de Beauvoir, then student of Robert Garric in philosophy at Sainte-Marie Institute of Neuilly, remembers him in his "Memoirs of a Tidy Wench" "Garric appeared; I forgot everything else and myself; the authority of his voice subdued me. In twenty years we he explained, he had discovered in the trenches the joys of camaraderie that removed social barriers. [...] To deny all limits and all separations, get out of my class, out of my skin: this slogan electrified me. [...] Must serve my life! Must serve all my life! "
