Counterfeit edition of La gazette de Cythère ou histoire secrète de madame la comtesse du Barry, published the same year, attributed to François Bernard, who allegedly worked here with Pidansat de Mairobert.
Late 19th-century half hazel glazed calf binding. Spine decorated with 5 small flowers. Red calf title-label. Rubbing at head. Brown stains at top of spine and on lower board. Full-margined copy, on thick paper.
Violent pamphlet against Comtesse Du Barry which appeared shortly after the disgrace of Louis XV's mistress, then in a convent and according to the author, considered dead to the world, whereas the Comtesse later reconciled with the royal family, had counter-revolutionary activities which led her to the scaffold. The work was immediately translated into English and German.
