Autograph letter dated and signed by Max Jacob addressed to Madame Léon Daudet (17 lines in black ink from Saint Benoit-sur-Loire) in which the poet expresses all his sadness and solicitude for the Daudet family mourning the loss of Philippe Daudet: "... j'ai appris tout le malheur qui frappe votre famille..." ["... I learned of all the misfortune striking your family..."] but also all his piety: "... croyez aussi à mes prières ferventes sinon pour le bienheureux enfant dont le ciel accueille l'innocence du moinsd pour les pauvres parents à qui le destin arrache hélas ! leur chair vive." ["... believe also in my fervent prayers if not for the blessed child whose innocence heaven welcomes at least for the poor parents from whom fate alas! tears their living flesh."]
On November 23, 1923, in a taxi, Philippe Daudet was found dead at the age of 14, his father, virulent journalist and monarchist militant accusing anarchist circles or the police of the Third Republic of having disguised this "crime" as suicide.
