André Malraux is not yet ready to send his work to the publisher: "... le livre ne parait pas cette année. Peut-être en mars 54. Et pour savoir où nous allons, il faudrait que la préface au moins fût terminée. J'en ai encore pour deux mois." ["... the book is not coming out this year. Perhaps in March 54. And to know where we are going, at least the preface would need to be finished. I still have two months of work ahead."]

He apologizes for not being able to respond quickly to his laudatory article before thanking him: "... it is certain that by emphasizing both the technical aspect and the other (underlined words), you render the book a great service, and take the animal by the right end...", he also acknowledges the clairvoyance and pertinence of his article despite the difficulty of properly apprehending the work: "... for these essays are not conceivable within traditional art criticism..." while praising the attachment that binds them: "... this attitude, which is the only just one, did it not necessarily imply a friendship that shows through each line, in a place where there is some merit in proclaiming it..."

André Malraux mocks the massive aspect of his work: "... avec le retard qu'implique le poids du livre, poids qui affirme aux esprits non prévenus le sérieux de l'auteur... Un des premiers "voix du silence" paru en même temps que votre article" ["... with the delay implied by the weight of the book, weight which affirms to unprejudiced minds the seriousness of the author... One of the first 'voices of silence' published at the same time as your article"] while praising the friendship of his benevolent correspondent: " ... je serais étonné de n'avoir à "Arts" que des amis ; vous avez pris parti. Ce que je ne tiens pas pour sans importance - et n'oublie pas..." ["... I would be surprised to have only friends at 'Arts'; you have taken sides. Which I do not consider unimportant - and do not forget..."]

Rare and handsome copy

Extremely rare first edition of this booklet presenting Robert Mallet-Stevens's iconic "Villa Cavrois", containing 47 photographs and 7 pages of sketches and plans. The house was commissioned by textile magnates Paul and Lucie Cavrois, for their family of seven ; construction and decoration took place between 1929 and 1932.
Publisher's spiral binding booklet, printed boards. Some foxing to the first cover, and also a faint dampstain to the right margin. Good condition inside.
Preface by Jean Mistler, then Minister of Postal services and former Under-Secretary of State in charge of Fine Arts. Followed by a presentation by Robert Mallet-Stevens, a manifesto of his total oeuvre: "Home for a large family. Home for a family living in 1934: air, light, work, sports, hygiene, comfort, economy. That was the program...".
A remarkably fresh copy of this true "incunabulum" of modern architecture, "the twenty-eight pages of this work celebrating its construction, quickly became an international success thanks to wide circulation in the press and specialized monographs" (Richard Klein).
