Autograph letter signed by the physician and microbiologist Charles Nicolle (30 lines in black ink on Institut Pasteur de Tunis letterhead) addressed to a friend from his property in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer in Calvados.

Charles Nicolle enjoys the invigorating Norman freshness: "Je jouis d'un parfait repos. J'y ai trouvé le frais, alors que j'avais beaucoup souffert de la chaleur à Paris et à Rouen." ("I am enjoying perfect rest. I have found coolness here, whereas I had suffered greatly from the heat in Paris and Rouen.") before setting off on the roads of France, Belgium and Italy to visit some friends.
He will return to the Institut Pasteur in Tunis some time later: "Je filerai sur Florence afin de m'embarquer le 1 octobre à Naples et de rentrer à Tunis le 4." ("I will head to Florence in order to embark on October 1st in Naples and return to Tunis on the 4th.") but hopes to meet his friend before taking the boat.
Charles Nicolle apologizes for not being very talkative but concludes this letter with a touching mark of friendship: "Ta bonne et solide amitié me remplit de joie. Il n'y a pas de joie en dehors de telles amitiés." ("Your good and solid friendship fills me with joy. There is no joy outside of such friendships.")
Fine friendship letter from Charles Nicolle, 1928 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on typhus, having notably discovered the role of lice in the transmission of infection in humans.
