Contemporary full sprinkled and glazed sheep binding. Smooth spine richly decorated with 2 diamond-patterned grotesque compartments and 2 large fleurons. Red morocco title label. Framed border on covers. Upper joint split over the first 2 compartments. One crack at head, same at tail. One corner bumped. Joints and corners rubbed. Foxing. 2 scratches on lower cover.
Handsome esteemed edition. The first edition of this work, which was abundantly reprinted, dates from 1747. Mme de Graffigny stands, behind Zilia's letters (a young Peruvian exiled in France), against the hypocrisy of morals and the inequality of women. The Lettres d'une péruvienne is certainly one of the first feminist novels. The style follows the sentimental vein that would flourish at the end of the 18th century.
