Elis Bennet is an English novelist born in 1750. Among the numerous English women writers of the late 18th century, she had some success and graced most libraries of novels. Here is what we find in L'Esprit des journaux français et étrangers, a periodical of the time: "L'auteur a mis en action cette maxime célèbre, que le coupable est puni tôt ou tard de ses fautes. Son roman, dont le fond ressemble à beaucoup d'autres, a cependant sa physionomie particulière, qui flattera les amateurs de ces sortes d'ouvrages." ["The author has put into action this famous maxim, that the guilty party is punished sooner or later for his faults. His novel, whose foundation resembles many others, nevertheless has its particular character, which will flatter lovers of such works."] The hero is a young man without scruples, given to his pleasures and vices, victim of a bad education. One of the most interesting aspects of this novel consists in the conception of its omniscient narrator, a commentator narrator, making moral digressions, etc.
Griselidis is a novella by Charles Perrault, which appeared for the first time in 1691. It tells the story of a prince who marries a shepherdess. Madly in love he never ceases to test her patience and love. The subject was drawn from Boccaccio.
Emerance was translated from Italian by Mademoiselle de Montmartrin and would be due to the pen of Fulvio Testi, who would not be its originator.
