Michel de MONTAIGNE Les Essais

Michel de MONTAIGNE

Les Essais

Chez Jean Berthelin, à Rouen s.d. [1619], in-8 (10,5x17cm), (12p.) 1127pp. (36p.), relié.

New edition listed by Sayce and Maskell (A Descriptive Bibliography of Montaigne's Essais 1580-1700, London, 1983) as number 22, type "Rouen B". Another edition also appeared in Rouen the same year, published by Angot.

A very rare edition with a different frontispiece to previous editions, a portrait of Montaigne at head. The edition was divided between Jacques Besongne, Nicolas Angot, Jean Berthelin, and probably other publishers in Rouen" (Tchemerzine, p. 422).
The frontispiece title was finely engraved by Honervogt and has the "eumdo" error instead of "mundo."
A portrait of the author by Thomas de Leu is bound in at the front of the volume.

17th century brown sheep, spine in five compartments with frames and grotesque flower motifs, gilt tools to spine.

Headpieces, edges of covers and corners very skillfully restored. Frontispiece portrait mounted on guards and laid down, with small hole at upper right. Slightly shaved at head (running title on p. 42 clipped and the first line of the following page a little shaved) without loss of text. Small hole with loss of a single letter on p. 399. One neatly repaired tear without loss to p. 541.
The introductory texts are composed of a Note to the Reader, a "Note on the Essays of Michel seigneur de Montaigne by his daughter in law," an enormous index of chapters and a discourse on the life of the author. With a significant index at end.

An attractive copy of this rare Rouen edition.
