Biography of the famous Buddhist monk Nichiren 13th century, founder of the eponymous Buddhist movement; his desire to reform the shogunate and feudal Japan brought upon himself and his school multiple persecutions. Artwork dating from 1858 from the Edo contemporary and published in 1883 under the Meiji era. Jesse died in 1880.
Six sewn accordion volumes, illustrated with six double-page engravings and two for volume 1; 3 two-page spread for the second; 5 for the third; 6 for the fourth; 5 for the fifth and the sixth to 5; or 28 double-page engravings, mostly in washes of black and gray.
Orange embossed cover. Label as a beige background on each volume. Printing on mulberry paper. Volume 2: work towards the sidelines and up the text on the last 6 sheets. Fine copy, very fresh and in good condition.
Jesse Katsushika (1821 - 1880) is the disciple and the official student Hokusai and continued the master's style.
