Exactly 20 years ago, the greatest literary critic of the twentieth century passed away in secret, as he had spent most of his life: away from the spotlight.

Or should we describe him as the most atypical of novelists? Some will call him a freethinker, others the most ambiguous of them all. We can all agree on at least one superlative, "the most mysterious of writers" after his disappearance on February 20, 2003, making him one of the most unknown of the great intellectual figures of our time.

The friends of Le Feu Follet are well aware of our attachment to this extraordinary character, whose archives and unpublished writings have been revealed through our team's extensive research.

En 2022, paraissait Thomas le Solitaire, le premier roman de Maurice Blanchot, grace au manuscrit conservé à la Hougthon Library de Harvard.
Réputé disparu pendant plus de 80 ans, ce roman fondateur fut retrouvé et catalogué en 2016 par la librairie Le Feu Follet puis acquis par l'Université de Harvard. Découvrez le manuscrit original et la toute première étude inédite sur cette oeuvre unique.

« Il y a, pour tout ouvrage, une infinité de variantes possibles. » C'est ainsi que Maurice Blanchot présenta en 1950 la nouvelle version de son roman Thomas l'obscur, « écrit […] à partir de 1932, remis à l'éditeur en 1940, publié en 1941 ». Déjà réduite au trois quarts en 1950, cette première version, devenue introuvable du vivant de Blanchot, appartient dans l'esprit de bien des lecteurs à un stade moins évolué de son écriture, et semble mériter la boutade de Jean Paulhan qui disait en 1942 à propos d'Aminadab : « Ce que [Blanchot] écrit est presque insoutenable en 400 pp. et parfaitement beau en 10 pages ». La découverte de Thomas le solitaire nous oblige à réviser ce jugement.

« Blanchot mit longtemps au défi photographes et caricaturistes de la presse littéraire. Minimalistes et rarissimes, sur tant d'années, sont les esquisses d'illustrations : en 1962 dans L'Express, une main brandit un livre, sur fond de page ; en 1979, dans Libération, un carré vierge au milieu de la page, portant pour toute légende le nom de Maurice Blanchot et une citation de l'Entretien infini (« un vide d'univers : rien qui fut visible, rien qui fut invisible ») » (C. Bident, Maurice Blanchot).
