Original etching done by chisel Petrus de Jode (or Pierre de Jode). Race on watermarked laid paper, working from the early seventeenth century. Board composed of two prints, each illustrating a passage from the Gospel according to John, respectively 19.25-27: "Near the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene Jesus. saw his mother, and of the disciple whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son Then he said to the disciple. Behold thy mother: and, from that moment the disciple took her to his home. "and 19.38". After this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus and Pilate gave him So he came.. and took the body of Jesus. " (Episode of the Crucifixion). Latin legend at the bottom of each print. Artist's signature in the plate. Numbered "18" in the lower left corner and "i" symbol in the lower right corner in the first etching references and references numbered "19" in the lower left corner and "ii" character in the corner lower right in the second etching. Handwritten mention "127" on the sidelines in the upper right corner of the board. An old handwritten annotation in Greek characters in pencil at the bottom of the bowl of the second etching. Visible watermark with transparency. Foxing and small stains, otherwise nice condition for this extremely rare engraving and freshness. Petrus (or Peter) de Jode (Antwerp, 1570-1634), was a Flemish engraver artist and publisher, son of Gerard de Jode. 1595, he traveled to Rome and then to the Netherlands, where he was a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius, before going to Paris. In 1600, he was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. He was also a pupil of Nicolaes Ryckmans from 1616 to 1622.
